Celebrating 60 Years of Excellence: A New Dawn at Archbishop Porter Girls’ Secondary School

The “Hill of Tranquility” in Takoradi was filled with joy and nostalgia from September 28 to October 5, 2025, as Archbishop Porter Girls’ Secondary School (APGSS) celebrated its landmark 60th Anniversary. Under the theme “Honoring Our Past, Inspiring The Future,” the Diamond Jubilee was marked by significant donations and a touching tribute to the school’s leadership history.

A Legacy Project: Renovated Kitchen and Chapel

The highlight of the homecoming was the official handing over of the school’s legacy projects. Demonstrating their unwavering commitment to their alma mater, the Archbishop Porter Past Students Association (APPSA) and various celebrant year groups spearheaded the transformation of essential campus facilities.

Modernized Kitchen: A fully refurbished, ultra-modern kitchen was unveiled, described as a “lasting legacy” and a gift of love to improve student life on campus.

Renovated Chapel: Alongside the kitchen, the school’s chapel underwent significant renovations, providing a refreshed spiritual sanctuary for the students.

Honoring a Pioneer: The Headbust of Ms. Marian Andoh Kesson

In a powerful moment of reflection, the school honored Ms. Marian Andoh Kesson, the first Ghanaian headmistress of APGSS. A headbust was installed in her memory, immortalizing her role in shaping the school’s identity after its founding in 1965 by Archbishop John Kwadjo Amissah. This tribute serves as a permanent reminder of the bold leadership that paved the way for decades of female excellence in the Western Region.

A Weekend of Celebration

The festivities brought together “Diva” alumni (APPSANs) from across the globe for a series of events:

Grand Durbar & Anniversary Launch: Attended by the Western Regional Minister and school leadership.

Thanksgiving Service: A beautiful service held at the cathedral to reflect on 60 years of academic and moral success.

Future Ambitions: During the celebrations, the APPSA Global body pledged to build a new 5,000-capacity multi-purpose hall to continue the school’s infrastructure growth.

The 60th anniversary was more than just a party; it was a reaffirmation of the school’s motto, “Purity of Mind and Body,” and a testament to the power of a community that never forgets its roots.
