Celebrating 60 Years of Excellence: A Diamond Jubilee to Remember

The hills of Takoradi were alive with “Porter Magic” as Archbishop Porter Girls’ Secondary School (APGSS) recently celebrated its landmark 60th Anniversary. From September 28 to October 5, 2025, students, staff, and the Archbishop Porter Past Students Association (APPSA) gathered to honor six decades of academic and moral distinction.

A Theme for the Future

The Diamond Jubilee was celebrated under the powerful theme: “60 Years of Academic and Moral Excellence: Harnessing Resources to Support the Girl-Child in STEM Education”. This focus underscored the school’s commitment to evolving with the times while maintaining its core mission of producing “globally-minded” and disciplined women.

Highlights of the Celebration

The week-long program was packed with events that blended tradition with modern flair:

The Grand Launch & Homecoming: The festivities kicked off with a massive “Float” through the streets of Takoradi, bringing “city vibes” to the celebration.

Legacy Projects: A major highlight was the formal handover of alumni-funded legacy projects, including a modern 600-bed dormitory designed to enhance student life on campus.

STEM Advocacy: In line with the theme, the event featured programs focusing on Girls in ICT and leadership, emphasizing hands-on skills in web development, robotics, and graphic design.

The Grand Durbar: Held on Saturday, October 4, this was the pinnacle of the week, bringing together stakeholders and dignitaries to witness the school’s “Success Story @ 60”.

Social & Spiritual Bonding: The celebration included an All-White Beach Party for reconnection and concluded with a powerful Thanksgiving Service to crown the four-day homecoming weekend.

A Legacy of “Purity of Mind and Body”

Since its founding in 1965 by Archbishop John Kwadjo Amissah, Porter Girls has been a beacon of excellence in Ghana’s Western Region. This 60th anniversary was more than just a party; it was a testament to the enduring “grace and beauty” of a school that continues to excel beyond excellence.

Whether you are a “Golden Girl” from the class of ’66 or a current student, the Diamond Jubilee reminded everyone why being a Portarian is a lifelong badge of honor.
