The year 2024 was a remarkable milestone in the journey of APPSA North America. As we officially became a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, our commitment to sisterhood, service, and support for Archbishop Porter Girls’ Senior High School became even more intentional and impactful. With over 200 active members across the United States and Canada, our community grew stronger, more connected, and more vibrant than ever before.
Our year began with a focus on health and wellness. In February, we hosted a virtual healthcare talk titled “Eating Well, Living Well, and Preventing Chronic Diseases”, led by a registered dietician. This session set the tone for a year rich in education and empowerment.
In May, members gathered for a fun and relaxing sisterhood hangout at Guapo’s Restaurant in Gaithersburg, strengthening personal bonds within the group.
The highlight of the year was undoubtedly our Annual Congress in June, held at the DoubleTree by Hilton in Gaithersburg, Maryland. The event brought together more than 100 Appsans for a weekend of learning, celebration, and worship. The conference featured CPR and First Aid training, followed by our Grand Dinner Ball, which included a successful fundraising session in support of our alma mater. We concluded the weekend with a heartfelt thanksgiving service at St. John Neumann Catholic Church.
In July, APPSA North America made history by donating 30 brand new computers to Archbishop Porter Girls’ Senior High School in Takoradi. The presentation was made by our President, Appsan Adwoa Amissah-Robb, and received by Mrs. Yacoba Coomson, APPSA National President, who handed them over to the Headmistress, Mrs. Charlotte Asiedu-Musa. This donation marked a significant step in our mission to support educational advancement at our alma mater. That same month, we joined AMOSA North America for a joint webinar titled “Managing Conflicts and Cold Wars in Relationships and Marriages”, an engaging and insightful discussion that addressed real-life relational challenges.
October, which marked Breast Cancer Awareness Month, was filled with impactful health-centered activities. We partnered with HOPSA North America for a webinar themed “Hope and Healing: A Breast Cancer Survivor’s Journey”, featuring expert insights from an oncologist. During our monthly meeting, we also held an open discussion on the importance of regular health screenings, emphasizing early detection and prevention.
Our November meeting served as a moment of reflection and planning as we began preparing for the close of the year.
In December, we ended 2024 on a joyous note with a Carols Night Service in Virginia, hosted in collaboration with the Old Students of St. John’s Secondary School. It was a festive celebration of the holiday season and a beautiful reminder of the power of unity and tradition.
As we reflect on this incredible year, we are proud of what we have accomplished together. From impactful health initiatives and sisterhood gatherings to meaningful contributions to our school, 2024 was a testament to the strength and heart of APPSA North America. We look forward to building this foundation in 2025 – Growing deeper in connection, broader in reach, and stronger in purpose.
